The local name for animism is Bon-choe and it predates Buddhism. The name draws some negative undertones whenever mentioned because, some elements of blood sacrifice called Mar-choe is prevalent in Bon-choe. With the onset of Buddhism such practices where slowly replaced and now most blood sacrifices are substituted by effigy rituals called Kar-choe.
